Sending the Baby into the World

The other day, I finally sent Part 1 to a number of brave volunteers to beta read. It only happened about 3 months later than I'd hoped... Bah. I'm still getting a handle on estimating the time required pump out revisions. This first part consisted of the prologue and the first fifteen chapters, four of which I rewrote from scratch as part of he revision process.

Now, I'm finishing my polish of chapter 16. I chopped the beginning scene off and just need to redo the start to convey the changes in the six month gap between chapters. I've already marked up the hard copy of the rest of the manuscript, so I have a pretty good idea of what's needed from here on out. Of the remaining thirty-eight chapters, I only have three more slated to rewrite from scratch and one completely new one to write. The rest is just text edits or smoothing of language/descriptions needed. And of course the never ending fact check.

Regardless, the first part of my baby is out in the world, being read on three continents. Here's hoping it's getting to publishable level.

Good luck!

Good luck. It's scary and wonderful sharing a novel (or parts of a novel!). But there is a benefit to sending it out in one piece than chapter by chapter.

If you want to swap full novels at any point, let me know. I'm editing mine mid 2010, probably won't be done till at least December.

Thanks!

And let me know when you get to that stage. Right now I'll pretend that I'll have a second manuscript ready by then. ;) My next project will be much shorter...

While reading The Fellowship of the Ring at the age of twelve, Stuart A. Etter was told by his teacher that he should be reading shorter books. Undaunted, he finished the trilogy and promptly moved on to other novels ranging from fantasy/sci-fi to historical fiction to horror to thrillers.

Prologue: The Prisoner

Damion rubbed age's dull ache from his hands. The years have nearly caught me, but my hands remain strong. Countless years marked by even more battles had strengthened the tendons and muscles of his hands, but time had also worn them down, replacing strength with occasional sharp pain. Closing his tired eyes, Damion dreamed of his past life....
